Dental School Admission Personal Statement

I would like to apply for a place at your University, on an advanced placement for international dentists. I graduated from University in India, with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. I came from a background of engineers and was the first in the family to enter the medical profession. Becoming a dentist was an ambition I had followed for many years, since I was very young, and every day I know I made the right decision to pursue the dream. I came to the United States two years ago in order to further my education and my career. Once arriving here I completed my National Board Dental Examination, both part one and part two. I undertook this exam primarily to increase my chance to gain admission into the advanced standing DDS programme for international dentists. I have also worked as a dental assistant for eight months in the U.S. and, while here, I have completed several training courses. I have obtained my x-ray certification and CPR, and completed three observerships, each under a different U.S. dentist. Additionally, I have attained my certification in coronal polishing and also in infection control. I have also completed a hands on workshop on veneers at UCSF. I have three years of experience working in a private dentistry practice in India. One of my professors in the prosthetic department offered me the opportunity to work at his clinic in the evening OPD. I was thrilled with the offer and accepted it immediately. My time at this clinic gave me valuable experience in prosthetics and fuelled my enthusiasm to work in this field. I have also spent time working in a charitable hospital. This experience opened my eyes to the demand for dentists who are prepared to work with patients from poor communities. The people I met there had many dental problems but, as they had very little money, their options for getting treatment were limited. I gained a great deal of knowledge and awareness from working at the hospital, and it ignited my desire to serve people from underprivileged backgrounds. While studying for my BDS, an incident occurred which encouraged me even further in my dentistry ambitions. During my rotatory internship, an ex-patient of mine came from endodontic department and into the oral surgery department, and requested her treatment to be from me and no other dentist. Therefore, I obtained permission from both departments and treated her. For me, this exchange reaffirmed that I have skills both in dentistry and in communication. Being friendly and approachable is a crucial element of effective patient care, and I was flattered that the ex-patient valued and remembered me in this way. I have several goals for the future. Ultimately, I wish to work in a private practice in prosthetic dentistry. I would also welcome the opportunity to teach dentistry to students at university level. Furthermore, my time at the charitable hospital has installed in me a burning desire to work in developing countries, serving people of poor communities. I am conscientious, passionate and one hundred per cent dedicated to my career in dentistry and to providing high levels of patient care. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to work with you at your institution.

Talent Development Organization to have an HR

Question: Describe about the Talent Development for Organization to have an HR. Answer: Introduction: Departments are the entities formed within an organization in order to carry out the tasks in an organized manner. The HR department of the organization has to ensure that the mission, vision, values is followed without a fail by every employee irrespective of his department and designation. HR departments within an organization are believed to have a strong impact on the culture of the workplace (Bobinski, 2016). HR department claims dominance over various organizational decisions that range from hiring to firing. The HR department is held responsible for maintaining the diversity of the workplace and implementing the policies and procedures of the organization. Necessity of an Hr Department: Argument- In my opinion, every company should have an HR department. The HR professionals have in-depth knowledge of a company's rules, policies and code of conduct. They have good interpersonal skills, ability to make rational decisions and delegate work to team members. They have excellent communications skills and credibility to influence the higher authorities. Confidence, passion, pro-activeness and the ability to accept challenges are some of the key qualities that an HR professional has. Recruitment, training and development, job designing, performance measurement, rewards recognition, motivation and job satisfaction are the areas where HR professionals are supposed to get involved. Counter Argument 1- HR department supposedly provides support to the employees of the organization and at the same time, the HR department has its loyalty towards the upper management for the purpose of performance measurement, maintenance of discipline and appraisal. Thus the clash of interests can lead to friction. In many cases, the HR department supports the upper management rather than supporting the employees. It is worth giving a thought that apart from recruitment and training of suitable candidates, HR professionals have a vital role in employee development, motivating and retaining the employees of the company. They are always readily available when the employees need any kind of support or guidance. There are several instances where the HR department has come to the rescue of employees where ethics are involved (Bia.ca, 2016). For example, a situation where, a female employee is harassed by the head of the department. The HR department takes a stand and issues a warning letter to the head of the department. Counter Argument 2- HR department does not deliver any value to the organization like the sales, retail, and marketing department help in generating revenues, attracting investors and creating a customer base. HR professionals spend most of their time in administrative and legal concerns of the organization. They have no idea about the existing and potential customers of the organization, their challenges and how an organization can expand its customer base (BusinessZone, 2013). In addition to this, they attach more importance to activities rather than their outcomes. In todays competitive world, it is not important what you do, but you, what matters are what you deliver. Yes, it is true that the activities performed by the HR professionals do not result in direct revenue generation, but they are responsible for managing the most important resource for the organization- manpower. It is the HR department only that ensures that all the prized employees are kept happy. They ensure that the salary and other benefits (like insurance, medical reimbursements, LTA etc.) Reach the employees on time. This is very important to keep the morale of the employees high to ensure high productivity. Counter Argument 3- There are some people who believe that HR professionals are neither good leaders nor strategic in nature. They lack strategic management and change management. The HR department can readily provide data regarding a number of people hired in 1 year, numbers of employees retained in a year, the extent to which the employees are satisfied with their jobs etc. but they cannot link these parameters with business performance (Davenport, 2015). HR professionals lack business acumen. For example, the training that is imparted during the initial days of joining does not help to enhance the performance of the employees. The training modules designed for new joiners are not attuned to the job requirements. The HR department tries to bring in uniformity and standardization in a diverse and complex workforce. Thus, outsourcing is a better option for recruitment, learning and development programs, and health and well-being norms. We should always consider the fact that the HR department always creates a distinction among the employees on the basis of their performance. The employees that perform well are given rewards recognition, salary hike, job promotions, etc. HR professionals are involved in benchmarking the salaries against industry standards on the basis of qualification, work experience, function and profile of the employees. Each and every employee within the organization doesn't give the same benefits (Davidson, 2005). Training modules are designed for new as well as existing employees to improve performance. The training modules are revised from time to time, and vary on the basis of department and designation. Several modules are made available on business ethics and whistle blowing. This fosters harmony in the workplace. HR professionals provide strategic inputs during career planning, employee engagement, designing a communication/ feedback system, job designing employee empowerment initiatives , designing a remuneration system etc. Counter Argument 4- Some employees feel that the HR departments operate at a very slow pace. For example, performance appraisals are very time-consuming. Documentation is required for each and every transaction. To make things worse, employees feel that the performance evaluations and performance appraisals are not fair (de Waal, 2013). There is a reason why documentation is done. Over the past few years, several laws and regulations have been introduced by government bodies and regulatory authorities whom the organizations have to abide. For example, rules regarding health and safety of employees, fair labor wages, leave entitlement etc. Due to the complexity of these regulations, the HR department takes reasonable cautions. For the performance appraisals, the rating is done by the managers on the basis of various parameters like the ability to take initiative, ability to drive business, team management, risk taking ability, confidence, acceptance to change, tenacity etc (Harolds et al., 2014). The HR department has no say in the ratings given to the employees of an organization. Conclusion: We can conclude the topic by saying that it is very essential for an organization to have an HR department. An HR profession should have the following qualities to raise the ladder of success and help the organization achieve its objectives in the best possible manner: Talent development: It is the responsibility of the HR team to recruit the right candidates for the job openings in the company. Once an employee gets onboard, HR department needs to develop a training program in order to enhance his efficiency. It is important to monitor the performance of employees and recognize their talent and hard work. Flexible: The most important role of the HR professional is being reactive, as the unexpected can happen anytime. There are situations like a breach of the code of conduct, issues related to discrimination and harassment, issues related to inter-departmental conflicts etc (Kazmi, Hasnu and Jamil, 2015). Each situation should be handled very tactfully. Integrity: The behavior of HR professional should always exhibit honesty and truthfulness. Other employees of the organization look up to the HR department for the high behavioral standards. Code of conduct should be followed while dealing with situations. Confidentiality: HR professional has access to a great deal of information that should not be disclosed such as payment records, disciplinary records, medical records, and previous employers reference (Mihalache, 2012) Communication skills: An HR professional should have excellent communications skills and credibility to influence the employees of the organization and should be confident enough to put across his point. Team management and leadership: It is very important for an HR professional being able to work as a team member and a team leader. It is important to understand the attitudes and behaviors of people in the group. There are different stages of group formation and the role of team leader varies in each stage(Merry, 2013). There has to be proper communication between team members and there should be group norms applicable to each team member. They should engage employees from all hierarchical levels to ensure organizational success. References Bia.ca. (2016).5 Key Factors to Successful Strategic Planning | Business Improvement Architects. pendiulm effects essays In this experiment we will observe the properties of a pendulum moving in a circular motion rather than the traditional back and forth motion. This will simulate the direction that a satellite would follow above the earths atmosphere. The purpose of this experminate will be to show how gravity pulls on the string and the path that the pendulum follows. 1. Pendulum with long string 4. Digital stop watch 2. pendulum clamp 5. two-meter stick 3. circular path draen on paper 6. vernier caliper hang the pendulum for the attached rod and allow the pendulum so its nearly to the floor. Then align the ball with the center of your circled paper and center the pendulum onto the circle. Practice rotating the pendulum so it follow the circle that you have made. After you have practiced this a few times make a mark on the circle, this is your starting point. Start the pendulum into motion so it will follow its path on the paper and after it has made a complete reveloution that is your first turn. Using your stop watch start timing the reveloutions that it has made. You can use as many turns as you like, just remember that you must make 1 complete turn before stateing that it is one turn. #65279;Tchaikovsky

#65279;Tchaikovsky Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Peter Ilyick Tchaikovsky was born on May 7th, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia. He was born second in a family of five sons. Tchaikovsky seemed to have a natural talent for music since he was young. At age five he started to take Piano lessons from his teacher Maria Markovna Palchikova and soon became better than her. As a pre-teenager, he attended school at St.Petersberg. His mother died in 1854 due to cholera. Peter again took piano lessons, this time with Rudolf Kundinger. In his youth, he continued to study law, attending the School of Jurisprudence although he found it quite boring and stopped. Tchaikovsky became rebellious to his family when he quit his job as a clerk for the Ministry of Justice, and began to study music at St. Petersberg Conservatory. Among his hobbies at the time were going to the Italian Operas (which were very popular in Russia at the time) and listening to Mozart.Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where Rimsky-Korsak...Due to his lack of educa tion though, at age 21, he could not tell how many symphonies Beethoven had composed.Tchaikovsky was first tutored by Zaremba, who taught him harmony and theory, although at the time Peter did not know if he wanted to be a musician or not. Anton Rubinstein was his next teacher, who taught him composition. There he composed the overture to "The Storm" and Overture in F (which he also conducted). In 1866 he moved to Moscow accepting a teaching job in a new conservatory along with Nicholas Rubinstein, Anton's brother. There he composed his first symphony, "Winter Dreams"(in G Minor). This symphony was significant because it was composed at night where he was having insomnia, along with headaches and hallucinations. This is why he was said to have never composed at night ever again. In 1874, Tchaikovsky composed the concerto in B flat Minor, which he was going to dedicate to his teacher Nicholas, but Nicholas criticized his work. He later composes symphony number 4 in F Minor. Tchaikovsk y was married to Anotonina Ivanovna Milyukov, but they later separated. Peter Tchaikovsky moved to a country house of at Maidanovo, and continued his Manfred, with help from Balakirev. At age 35, he produced what might me his most famous opera, Swan Lake in 1875.In 1888, Tchaikovsky made a highly successful international concert tour as conductor, meeting at Leipzig Brahms, Grieg and others, at Prague Dvorak, at Paris Gounod, Massenet, and Paderewski. Finishes his Fifth Symphony, in E Minor. Three years later, he Visits America, and conducts his own compositions at the ceremonies opening Carnegie Hall, New York. In 1890, he had the production of the opera Sleeping Beauty. In 1892, he has the first performance of the Nutcracker Suite. In the last years of his life, Peter returned to his country house at Klin in January of 1893, and begins his Symphony No.6, the "Pathetic." He later went to England in June to receive an honorary degree from Cambridge University, together with other fam ous composers like Boito, Bruch, Saint-Saens and Grieg. The Sixth Symphony performed under his direction at the St.Petersburg on Oct. 28, without marked success. In November 6, 1893 Tchaikovsky died. Reasons for his death are controversial. Some say that he developed cholera and dies in St.Petersburg others say that he committed suicide by taking poison to escape accusations of homosexuality.Operas Names Dates Composed The Voyevode 1867-68 Undine 1869 The Oprichnik 1870-72 Vakula the Smith 1874, 1875 Eugenen Onegin 1877-78 The Maid of Orleans 1878-79, 1882 Mazeppa 1881-83 Tcherevichky Oxana's Caprices 1885 Queen of Spades 1890 Iolanthe 1891 Ballets Names Dates Composed Swan Lake 1875-76 The Sleeping Beauty 1875-76 The Nutcracker 1891-92 Dmitri the Pretender introduction to Act 1 1870 Snow Maiden 1873 domovoy scene in The Voyevode 1886 Hamlet 1891

Housing association governance puts the interests of the organisation Coursework

Housing association governance puts the interests of the organisation above those of residents. Discuss - Coursework Example hort a Housing Association is a society or company established for the purpose of providing; constructing; improving or managing; facilitating and encouraging the construction or improvement of housing accommodation. Housing associations are not governed by the state or the government. It is a privately functioning body that aims to provide people of all categories with the type of homes they need in their desirable location. The association consists of a board of members, senior officers who have knowledge about this sector, and some volunteers. The targeted groups for housing association can be older people, disabled people, young people, bachelors, couples, or any other type of people who are looking for homes to buy or for rent. The housing association is earning a great amount of money through this property dealing business as the housing has become expensive, especially in larger cities, which makes it difficult for people to find suitable homes for themselves. Good governance in the housing association is fundamental to establishing successful organisations. It enables them to deliver their aims and objectives and, in particular, deliver excellent quality services to tenants, ensure the proper use of public funding, and safeguard the reputation of the sector. The housing association governance operates according to the law and their constitutions; it is headed by an effective board with a sufficient range of expertise and executive arrangements that gives capable leadership and control. Housing association maintains the highest standards of integrity in all their dealings; it protects public investment and is responsive to residents’ views and priorities. Further the duties of housing association governance includes dealing with the Housing Corporation in an open and co-operative manner, notifying any anticipated or actual violation of the Code or anything that might significantly affect its ability to fulfil its obligations under the Code and de-track

Factors Involved in Fraud Cases with External Auditors Essay

Factors Involved in Fraud Cases with External Auditors - Essay Example As financial statements represent the functioning of the management, it is essential to maintain authenticity and reliability for avoiding fraudulent actions, while preparing such reports. The auditors express their views associated with the maintenance of authenticity and transparency by the management. They have been given the authority to assess these financial statements of organizations in order to judge the transparency of such information. They gather evidences in order to assure that the figures appearing in financial statements do not include material misstatement. The credibility of such reports is incremented by means of the audit process carried out by the auditors. These reports audited by auditors have huge impact on the decisions of investors, bankers, creditors and other stakeholders. The economy is struggling hard for recovering from a tumultuous situation which is infested with severe corporate scandals associated with misconduct of the auditors which have resulted in losing investor’s confidence. Presently, greater emphasis is given on improving the credibility, accountability, transparency and trust associated with the information provided in financial statements (Romero, 2010). The present structure involved in the audit process seems to be very problematic. Most of the big organizations generally pay their auditors by means of a third party known as the ‘audit system’. There are cases where clients make these payments directly to the auditors. In such cases, there is an added incentive paid by the clients to the auditors for delivering favourable news. Now the question which arises is whether such actions affect the real performance of auditors or influence them to lose their independence (Cooper & Neu, 2006). Actually, it does affect the real performance of auditors, thereby reducing the transparency and authenticity of the information in their audit reports. The auditors manipulate the figures in these financial state ments in order to earn high incentives. This has become one of the most remarkable issues requiring urgent attention in the present scenario. The thesis would be conducted on the topic, ‘Factors involved in fraud cases with external Auditors’. It would be done by dividing the entire analysis into three segments. The study would highlight that the auditors are influenced in three different ways: conflict in interest, double positioning threat and finally, the familiarity threat. Analysis Conflict in Interest The auditor’s independence is the major area of concern in this study. It is known that the managers have an interest in misrepresenting, exaggerating or manipulating the information provided in the financial statements of organizations. It is expected that an independent audit report must provide unbiased and credible appraisal related to the financial status of an organization. The significance of the auditor’s independence has been shown in American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ (AICPA’s) Code of Professional Ethics. It has been made mandatory by various legal decisions, which are provided by the Supreme Court of United States, in their opening quote. Recently, there was a series of events which has raised questions regarding the independence involved in the present practices related to accounting.

I am Legend Essay Example for Free

I am Legend Essay When thinking of horror films, simple features come to mind for what you need to produce a good movie. Monsters are always a big plus in order to get a good scare factor. A good horror film will have drama that usually leads to the death of a main character or other supporting characters. I believe I Am Legend is a good contender for a low-key horror film. Under the direction of Francis Lawrence was a film written by Mark Protosevich. In 2007 this movie was a big hit in the theaters, for its incredibly gritty and strong story line. Actor Will Smith played the part of the Main character Robert Neville, who thought he found the cure for cancer but in fact spread a disease out through the world. The whole movie is played in New York City, were David a scientist announces he has a cure for cancer when in fact it is a plague that turn the people into monsters. So the plot of the movie is David Surviving in New York by himself, trying to test rats for the cure to the virus. That catch to the movie is that all the monsters are contagious and only come out at sun down to find other humans to spread the virus. In this movie you had a lot of glimpses and scenes that would show that this movie could be a horror film. The two examples of horror films I used in the first paragraph are shown in many scenes of I Am Legend. The virus that spread through the people made them monsters and in a good horror film you need a scary, deadly, nasty monster to be the antagonist. The monsters in I Am Legend are the typical creature for a horror film. They are not easy to look at which gives into a scarier character. They are very mean and ruthless and show no mercy. The last feature that is a main feature is that they will kill with no questions. The drama part of a horror film usually ends with death and the scene usually has a lot of anticipation on it to put you on the edge of your seat. In I Am Legend when David is out doing his rounds and gets baited into a booby trap he gets knocked out and wakes up in the trap a little too late. The monsters are waiting for the sun to come down to attack and infect David. In a showing of great effort but significant downfall David’s dog Sam) is attacked and becomes infected. Almost turning on its own owner David is forced to kill his only sort of companionship and is left alone for the time being. The director did a good job with this movie because he produced a good storyline built with a lot of anticipation. I believe that he did try and put in that scary horror effect with the darkness of the movie and the frightening creatures. Even though I Am Legend is characterized as a â€Å"dramatic thriller†, in most instances it can definitely be considered a horror film.

If Only They?d Listened To Pig :: essays research papers

If Only They’d Listened to Piggy   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Throughout the novel Piggy’s character is used to represent the intellectual side of man and act almost like an adult figure to the boys. There are many things that he does and that Golding says to support this. Three things come to mind that represent his place in the novel; he is a clear thinker, his appearance, and his symbolic losses throughout the book.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Right off the beginning we see evidence of Piggy’s thinking ability. He realizes the boys’ situation and is thinking about how they are going to survive. He says â€Å"We got to find the others, we got to do something.† We then see indication of his intelligence, he says, â€Å"A conch†¦he used to blow it†¦ he kind of spat†¦ you blew from down here.† Only a bright person would know the name of a rare shell and how to blow it to make a noise. Further on at the end of chapter two Piggy compares the fire on the mountain to the fires of hell. It almost like he can â€Å"see† what is going to happen to the kids. Also he says â€Å"acting like a crowd of kids† as if was the adult on the island trying to help the â€Å"kids†. More proof of his clear thinking is the fact that Ralph relies on Piggy’s good advice to succeed. Without Piggy, Ralph would be lost. As the story progresses we see the boys drif t apart however we see Piggy try to retain order as an adult might. When there is going to be a fight he says, â€Å"Come away. There’s going to be trouble. And we’ve had our meat.† He realizes the intensity of the situation and tries to stop any altercation. The boys continue to drift apart but Ralph and Piggy continue to be friends. In particularly, after the killing of Simon, Piggy tries as best as he can to support Ralph although he realizes they were a party to the violent death. He says, â€Å"You stop it. What good are you doing talking like that.† Although his is wise no one seems to listen to him except for Ralph, those who didn’t respect him may wish they had.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Piggy’s role as a grown-up mainly backed up by what he says and his actions, however his appearance is symbolic of his role in the novel. He is fat, â€Å"bad-looking†; it is this which leads to the boys lack of respect for him.

Learning Team Deliverable Essay

Credibility is the most important part of the group’s discussion last week. The members of the team agreed that credible sources must have a backup make a valid argument otherwise an argument or claims could become an opinion or an invalid argument. One disadvantage of not having credible information is it could tarnish one’s reputation and mistrust from audiences. Once the information has been put out to the public, the receiver or audience could verify the information to ensure that it comes from credible and reliable information. The speaker builds trust among the audiences when a claim or an argument presented are credible information and comes from a trustworthy source. The group also discussed the process of a claim becoming a belief using critical thinking. When a claim occurs, active listeners will analyze the total image of the message. The message image includes the words they heard, the emotion they felt and all the nonverbal cues they saw. They evaluate all the information they received against what they know to be true, to verify the credibility with the claims content and source. When fallacies in the claim get uncovered, they must be further dissected taking out the rhetoric and emotive instigators thus, leaving the contents of a valid argument and a response to the claim formulated. If the response shared, the communication cycle has a chance to circle back to the sender to further argue their claim. The message is successful when a claim is found favorable. Since the internet is where we get most of our information, it is important  to examine the source of the information and ensure factual evidence and not the author’s point of view. In evaluating the credibility of internet sources, one must examine whether information is a fact or the author’s opinion. Does it contain original information or simply just links? Is the information accurate? The information needs to be validated against other reliable resources for comparison and evaluate the author of the information. The author should come from a reputable and known organization in his field of expertise. The website must have a list of biographical information of the author to include his position, education, affiliation, and address. Judging the reliability of sources and site on the internet is crucial since there are no regulating body that monitors its reliability and authenticity. The lists of criteria to consider are as follows; the author or sponsor of the webpage should be identified and have apparent qualifications, must contain a copyright symbol and no obvious reason for biases. How To Gain Hands-On Experience for a Job

How To Gain Hands-On Experience for a Job You know you need experience to get a job. Trouble is, you can’t get any on-the-job experience without first having a job. It’s the classic early career Catch-22. The good news, however, is that there are a ton of ways to gain work experience before you ever get your first proper job. Make sure to plan ahead and accumulate valuable skills and knowledge from these experiences in time to apply for your first job. Here are a few great ways to get experience without getting â€Å"hired.†1. InternshipsAn internship is just like a job in that you do a ton of work, learn a lot, and gain valuable experience in a field. But it’s not at all like a job in that you usually get paid very little or nothing at all- and the term is usually short. Internships are widely available, in almost every field. Figure out what industry you want to work in eventually, and then get involved learning the tricks of the trade. You’ll have to fetch some coffee, but it just might get you hired one day.2. ShadowingUse your network, professional association, school career office, other programs, or even family members to find someone in your chosen field who would let you shadow them. This could be anywhere from a few hours to a few days, but lets you get valuable insight into the day-to-day experience of that field.3. VolunteeringYou definitely won’t be paid, except in the satisfaction of helping others, but you will gain a ton of experience that will look excellent on your future resume. Many provide training. All will give you access to learning the skills you’ll want, whether that be in child or elder care, administration, writing, teaching, coaching, fundraising, sales, mentoring, phone manner, construction, arts, etc.4. School/Community WorkThink your extracurricular activities don’t count? Any time you participate in a club or organization, whether sports or arts or religion related, you can gain a ton of experience that will set yo u up surprisingly well for the job market.5. FreelancingSometimes you have to prove you have what it takes before you can actually be brought on board. If you freelance, you can prove your talents and skills and expertise first and then make your way onto the payroll. And after your first gig, you’ll have racked up a ton of professional experience for next time.6. NetworkingIt isn’t always all about what you know. Sometimes a job will come down to who you know. Make sure to start growing a robust network of contacts and keeping yourself as current as possible.

Textbook evaluation Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 1

Textbook evaluation - Assignment Example Generally, the books aimed to meet the requirements of ELT are commercialized and generic and lacks to target a specific group of learners. According to Altan (1995, p. 59) Our modern course books are full of speech acts and functions based on situations which most foreign language students will never encopunter..."Globally" designed course books have continued to be stubbornly Anglo-centric. Appealing to the world market as they do, they cannot by definition draw on local varieties of English and have not gone very far in recognizing English as an international language, either. For setting the criteria to select the right course books for ELT, teachers need to consider the learners. the selected material should be motivational, creative, interesting, relevant and it should meet the needs of the individuals. Teachers should know the needs of ELT students. The course books should be picked on the basis of needs analysis. Adopting this technique would outline the needs of the student in listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary knowledge and teaching them the grammar rules. It is also important that course books should be selected on the knowledge and experience of the students, besides their needs. The second important thing to remember is the curriculum and context of the course books. The selected course books should meet the needs of the students and it should have all the material which is required by the teachers to make the students understand the basic rules. Curriculum and context of the course books greatly influence the teachers decision about selecting the right teaching material. The curriculum should meet the goals and objectives for the learners as well as the course of study. Curriculum and context should meet the learning requirements of the ELT students (Nunan, 1998, p. 23). The external evaluation of a specific book begins from its author, publisher, the

Analyze effective communication practices within diverse contemporary Essay

Analyze effective communication practices within diverse contemporary families - Essay Example People are not as close to each other as they once were. The much older folks prefer their people close to them. This is unlike the younger ones who prefer the distance between family members to be relatively large. Mobile phones are the only connection that enables people to communicate. This paper will review some stages present in the family life cycle. Also, it will look into the effects that effective communication plays in the different family settings that exist today. There are different stages that are present in the family life cycle. This is the transition that different families undergo during certain phases in their lives. This means that a family can undergo changes in their lives as times change, and the need to adapt to their immediate environment arises (Tutwiler, 2005). The first stage in the family cycle is the where young adults leave their homes. This is maybe in search of emotional and financial stability. This they may achieve on their own or maybe through help. At this stage, they struggle to create their own identities by becoming self-reliant. The comfort that comes with achieving independence is what drives them. The second stage that comes in the family life cycle is the joining of a couple. This is either through marriage, or living together. Here, a couple gets to adapt to the changes by learning to live with their spouse, and all the people in the other person’s life. Commitment is the fundamental foundation on which this stage is based on (Gonzalez, 2005). Without commitment, the people in this arrangement may not have the ability to stand the test of time let alone have the time to create a family of their own. The third stage is the introduction of children into the family. Children bring a whole new dimension to the family structure. Room and time have to be created so as to accommodate them. They bring the family structure closer. This is sometimes

Digital Evidence and Social Media Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Digital Evidence and Social Media - Article Example The case of Governor Chris is one where digital evidence served to show his vengeance against the mayor of the city. In the case, emails were released as prove that Governor Chris did orchestrate massive traffic issues in Fort Lee in New Jersey. The incident was an act of retribution that had some political connections. The release of the emails as that were evident as part of the investigations about the allegations did spiral into a major political scandal because of the weight of credibility that they carry. In dealing with digital evidence, it is noteworthy to know that electronic activities leave a sequence of footprints (Kizza, 2010). Therefore, it is very easy too although trying to find some specific evidence may seem quite laborious because of the volumes involved. In the case of Governor Chris, he used emails in order to plan his revenge activities. The incident led to the closure of access lanes leading to a massive traffic jam. Although the port authority managed to justify the decision by claiming that it was conducting a traffic study, the latter justify the incident. There was the retrieval of the emails used to make the orchestrations sent directly from the Governor and they formed the basis of filing a scandal against him. When working with digital evidence, no doubt one has to ensure a lot of care because the evidence is very volatile. The previewing and acquiring of data may potentially disturb the data to the extent of changing its status thus causing some doubts concerning his credibility. Therefore, one has to follow some logical steps in order to ensure that the evidence is intact (Kizza, 2010). In the case against Governor Chris, Wildstein did provide a number of emails that Chris’s staff sent to state lawmakers’ panel that was investigating the closures.

Design Activities and Environments Essay Example for Free

Design Activities and Environments Essay 1. Review the definitions of architectural and detailed design and the brief descriptions of high-level design activities at the beginning of the chapter. Which activities are clearly architectural? Which are clearly detailed? Which can be architectural or detailed? Designing the support services architecture and deployment environment and designing the software architecture are clearly architectural. Designing use case realizations and designing the database are clearly detailed. Designing the system and user interfaces and designing the system security and controls can be architectural or detailed. 2. Discuss the evolution of client-server computing from file server to multilayer applications to Web-based applications. What has been the driving force causing this evolution? Where do you think network computing will be in the next five years? Ten years? Cheaper computers, and networks, ubiquitous networking, and the desire of companies to increase the accessibility of their systems to increase the customer base/satisfaction, gain efficiencies from greater inter- and intraorganization coordination, and greater flexibility to reorganize people, processes, and systems. 3. Assume that the deployment environment for a high-volume payment processing system consists of the following: †¢ DB2 DBMS running under the OS/390 operating system on an IBM S/390 mainframe †¢ WebSphere application server running under the Z/OS operating system on an IBM zSeries 900 mainframe †¢ CORBA-compliant component-based application software written in Java that will be executed by other internal and external systems What are the key architectural design decisions that must be made for the system? When should the decisions be made and who should make them? Outline the subsequent design tasks that should occur after the key architectural design decisions are made. To what extent can the subsequent steps be performed in parallel? Some key architectural decisions to explore include: the key components and subsystems, where each component will execute and how will all of the pieces interoperate (which requires nailing down how the network, CORBA, and database infrastructure will be configured)? Many of the decisions depend on whether the supporting infrastructure is already in place. If it is, then many of the architectural decisions can be delayed until much code has been written and tested. If not, then the required infrastructure and tools will have to be acquired and configured. Developers will have to be trained, and architectural design will need to occur early to ensure that the developers don’t make any â€Å"mistakes† due to lack of fit with the development or deployment environment. Note that an OO development approach is assumed given the nature of the infrastructure and tools 4. Develop a network diagram that supports the architectural design decisions in your answer to number 2. Answers will vary. Some important points that should be included are: File servers just sent the data across the network. They tended to use lots of bandwidth, because the entire file was sent. Also, since the applications that processed the data were on all the different workstations, deployment and maintenance of these applications was expensive. Application servers moved the applications from the workstations (clients) to the server. This made it easier to maintain a consistent set of applications and to upgrade the applications. This movement was influenced by the appearance of â€Å"thin clients† that had very little storage, but good processing capability. However, due to the drastic reduction in storage costs, thin clients have not caught on. Multi-tier networks are where multiple servers and clients work together to provide the complete functionality of a system. Some processing will be on the clients. Servers such as database servers and application servers provide additional capability. The driving force behind much of this is the rapid growth and capability of the Internet and languages such as JAVA with protocols such as J2EE. Microsoft’s .NET also provides capabilities to have distributed systems. Answers for the future will vary.

The Second Coming :: Second Coming

The Second Coming In his poem "The Second Coming," Yeats predicts cataclysmic changes about to be wrought upon human kind. He states, "Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;/Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world," (1511). This statement is in line with Modernistic thought of this time period. Modernistic writers felt that traditional teachings left something to be desired, and that it was time for change. There was a huge upheaval in religious beliefs and current religious convictions were being challenged with new scientific knowledge. Yeats foresees spiritual changes in the words, "Surely some revelation is at hand;/Surely the Second Coming is at hand..."(1511). The Modernistic period was also a time when questions were asked about the old, established, and customary beliefs. Writers attempted to challenge people to think about archaic ways of conduct, and to check the motivations behind their beliefs. Joseph Conrad stated in Heart of Darkness, "Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair,"(1377). He portrays in these lines the ugliness of Europeans treatment of another culture. He is challenging his reader to adopt another attitude, but does not ever tell his reader how to feel, another defining feature of literary Modernism. Conrad tells us about a Black man with a white cloth tied about his neck. Again he does not interpret this white cloth, but leaves it open to our interpretation, "He had tied a bit of white worsted round his neck - Why?"(1377). Conrad questions the motives o f white Europeans in Africa, repeatedly referring to their greed: ". . . weak-eyed devil of a rapacious and pitiless folly..."(1377). Conrad, in his statement about their building of a railway, "The cliff was not in the way or anything but this objectless blasting was all the work going on"(1376), asks his reader to observe the violence against a country, not only its people, but the actual land.

Guidelines for the Provision and Assessment of Nutritio Support Therapy in the Adult Critically Ill Patient

This section gives a description of the most commonly used monitors for tolerance to the entral nutrition. It likewise discusses the pertinent data that are important to the practice. The tolerance for EN of all patients must be monitored and all inappropriate cessation of the EN must be avoided at all cost. However, there are a number of factors that may affect the delivery of EN.There is a tendency for health care providers who prescribe the formulation to under-order calories and as such, there are patients who only receive approximately 80% of what they deserve. The combination of under-ordering and inadequate delivery that results in the patients receiving only half of the target goal calories. It is a fact that the intolerance accounts for approximately one-third of the time of cessation. There are also other reasons for cessation like the remaining NPO after midnight for the diagnostic tests and the procedures in another third of the patients.Using enteral feeding protocols inc reases all percentage of goal calories provided and must be implemented. In the same way, all the patients that are placed on EN must be checked for risk of any aspiration. Aspiration is the most leading feared complications that EN can give to a patient. All people who are at risk for aspiration may be detected by several factors which includes the use of nasoentric and endotracheal tube and the mechanical ventilation. There are many complications that may arise due to the use of enteral tube feedings and one of the effects is diarrhea. The diarrhea that being suffered by the ICU patient who is receiving EN must be investigated immediately.E. Selection of Appropriate Enteral FormulationWhen it comes to selecting the proper enteral formulation for the critically ill patient, the one in charge must first ascertain if the patient is one of the candidates for the specialty immune-modulating formulation. Patients more likely to display a more favorable outcome who would be a proper candi date for the use of ummune-modulating formulations include all people that are undergoing G1 surgery and trauma, and those that have head and neck cancer.Numerous data suggest that adding amounts of pharmaconutrients to the enteral formulations gives many further benefits on the outcome of the patients rather than using the standard formula alone.   It is unfortunate though that there are a few studies that have discussed the effects of individual pharmaconutrients and their dosage. This literature was criticized greatly for the heterogeneity of the studies that are performed in a great range of ICU patient populations. The multiple enteral formulations are said to be immune-modulating, but they considerable cange in their characteristics and the dosage of the individual components. There is no certainty as to whether or not the date from the studies that were published as well as their recommendations can be extracted in order to use the formulations that have not been evaluated i n a formal way.In order to receive the maximum therapeutic benefit from the immune-modulating formulations at about 50% to 60% of the goal energy requirements must be delivered. According to the studies, the benefit of EN as well as the added value of immune-modulating agents have an effect which is dose-dependent.Patients who have the worst cases of diarrhea may gain some benefit from the use of the soluble fiber-containing formula and a small portion of peptide semi-elemental formulation. The laboratory data, the theoretical concepts as well as the expert opinions that support the use of the peptide enteral formulations however, large protective trials are not available to make this one a strong recommendation.ReferencesMcClave, S., Martindale, R., Vanek, V., et., al. Impact of Korean Culture in North East India Essay

There is a foreign invasion taking place in India’s Northeast region. But the invasion is not from neighboring countries like China or Bangladesh. This time round, it is a cultural invasion. The North eastern states have been experiencing a shift in cultural assimilation from western Americanize ethos(people, system) to Korean and Japanese culture. The wave of globalization and information and communication technology revolution has also been felt in the North Eastern States of India. Korean culture is spreading like wild-fire across the North East India. Everything that’s Korean is selling hot. Korean culture ranging from soaps, music, food, movies. Markets flooded with Korean DVDs, sometimes pirated sold at 100-200 Indian Rupees. Every home has not less than 20 DVDs. The rooms of young people are adorned with posters of Korean actors. Koreans ethos has taken over hearts and homes of many families. The demand for Korean soaps, cinema, fashion and language is at a new peak. What made it possible? Many factors facilitate the raid of the phenomenon. Some of them may be discussed as follows: Socio-cultural implications of K-POP culture: New movie cult: The Korean movies are gradually replacing the Bollywood and even the Hollywood ones. Instead of current Bollywood favourites, it is movie names like â€Å"The Classic†, â€Å"Windstruck†, â€Å"A Moment to Remember†, â€Å"My Sassy Girl† etc. , that are on the lips of the teenagers. The posters of Korean actors and actresses have replaced that of Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Aishwarya Rai, and others. In Mizoram even the older generation has been addicted to Korean movies since the local cable television translated Korean films and dramas. New youth culture: With the arrival of Arirang, its impact upon the North East people, especially among the youngsters has been felt in many ways. For example, after watching the various Korean serials on Arirang, there is an earnest desire by the youngsters to imitate and copy everything from language, to food habit, to dress style, even the body language and some Korean manners. They have started using some common sentences used in the day to day life by the serial stars. For instance, aneo (hello), sarangheo (I love you), kamsahamnida (thank you), etc. They begin to wish each other through Korean style. They have become so familiar with the Korean actors, actresses and singers that most of them know Rain, Seven, Bigbang etc. Some of them can even sing some of their favourite Korean singers’ songs. Among school kids and teenagers, Korean movie is one of their hot topics since many things in Korean cultural life that are shown in serials and movies, can relate with their own life and society. The youths have also started sleeping on the floor of their room instead of on the bed. They feel that it is so fashionable. New business trends: These pirated films, which can be rented for as low as five rupees or ten rupees for a night are a rage with the audience. These movies come in special DVD formats consisting of around eight to nine movies in a DVD. They make copies and either sell them or rent them out. Imported items from South East Asian countries through Myanmar, are flooded with pirated movie, television serial and music CDs mainly from Korea. The rise of the Korean Wave in India particularly in the Northeast region of India is a unique phenomenon. The ‘wave’ has reached the shore of Northeastern region of India, particularly Nagaland state since 2007. The wave hit stronger after the first ever Korea-India Music Festival was held in Kohima in 2008 under the joint partnership of Nagaland government and the South Korea government. In 2009, the Korean singers, wrestlers and even Korean food featured during the Hornbill festival, a yearly event festival held in Kohima. Naga boys and girls belted out Korean songs. Why people in Northeast India have easily assimilated to Korean culture while Indian culture is just at their doorsteps? Perhaps this question is seldom asked. This may be because of physical similarities between the Koreans and the northeasterners who are mostly of Mongoloid stock. People find Solace/comfort/relief in Korean entertainment because of the likeness in physical appearance. Another factor might be attributed the ban of Hindi movies by militants in the northeast. However, had there been no physical similarities between Korea and the tribal of Northeast India, the wave may not have much impact to attract customers. The Korean Wave is therefore, the result of a star system and new entertainment management firms that have a strong appeal to the audience. On the other hand, as one of the most popular cultural discourses among Asians, the Korean Wave has certainly created a new set of cultural symbols in this region. The Korean government has combined this cultural symbol with economic development. It is clear that the Korean government has been trying to foster the ties apparently, for economic benefits through promoting cultural industry. The Korean wave has moved beyond a fad and is here to stay. But the cultural boom has helped the Koreans in two ways – promotes cultural ties and business deal follows.

Art and architecture around the world essays

Art and architecture around the world essays On Friday night, November 12th, I attended the lecture about Art and Architecture around the world, given by Dr. Irini Vallera-Rickerson. Being that I am very interested in both art and architecture, I was very excited to see different cultures forms of these subjects. Dr. Irini Vallera-Rickerson had the goal of filling the Robert B. Moore Theater in order to raise $10,000 for many helpful causes, including AIDS awareness...and her goal was definitely achieved. The theater was full of many different people and their families, including students, teachers, and community members. The lecture began with an informative discussion about AIDS and how it affects the people around the world, and our community. There were many new and interesting facts and statistics concerning this matter, some being a bit saddening, while others were more hopeful and optimistic for the future of those infected with the disease. Soon, Dr. Vallera-Rickerson took the stage as our tour guide around the wor ld of art and architecture within different eras and cultures. Some main focuses of the lecture were sites in Greece, Italy, Spain, and a few in America. The most interesting to me were the creations of the Spanish artist and architect, Antonio Gaudi, whose masterpieces were breathtaking. His works were so creative and odd, and he added great detail that presented such a unique style. Every piece of art I saw that night was amazing, and I would recommend everyone to attend one of these special events; it is definitely worth it. Anyone who enjoys any type of art, travel, entertainment, or just helping out the community shouldnt miss out on this insightful presentation. ...
